Self-Publishing Pricing: What Does It Cost to Publish a Book?

If you’ve been thinking about writing and self-publishing a book, you’ve probably thought about self-publishing pricing. Maybe you’ve Googled some version of the question: What does it really cost to publish a book? You’ve probably gotten answers ranging from practically nothing to tens of thousands of dollars, leading to more confusion. But the truth is, self-publishing pricing varies significantly due to multiple factors — including your skill set.

For example, you can write your manuscript, create a cover in Canva, format the interior, upload everything to Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), and spend very little on self-publishing. Or you can hire professionals to help you write, edit, design, format, publish, market, and launch a book for the purpose of establishing you as an authority and expanding your business. These are two different self-publishing strategies, each requiring a different investment.

As someone who has helped more than 500 authors publish their books and reach the Amazon Best Sellers list, I’ve learned that the most relevant question is: What am I trying to accomplish with my book, and what level of investment will help me get there?

At a Glance

  • Self-publishing pricing varies based on several factors, including the author’s ability to professionally format their manuscript and design their own cover.
  • Most authors choose to work with professionals such as ghostwriters, editors, cover designers, interior formatters, and book publicists, adding to the self-publishing cost.
  • In terms of the Amazon self-publishing cost, the online retailer does not charge an upfront fee, due to its print-on-demand model.
  • For print books, Amazon bases the wholesale cost on page count, trim size, ink type, and paper type.
  • The Kindle Direct Publishing cost differs, depending on the royalty option you choose. If you choose 70% royalties, Amazon deducts applicable digital delivery costs, according to the file size.
  • As of July 7, 2026, authors who sell eBooks on Amazon.com that meet the requirements for the 70% royalty option can generally price them from $2.99 to $12.99. Previously, the upper limit was $9.99.
  • Self-publishing vs. traditional publishing: working with professional ghostwriters, editors, formatters, cover designers, and book launch experts can increase the cost to self-publish a book as high as $20,000 or more (if you require a ghostwriter). When an author works with a traditional publisher, they generally do not have to deal with direct publication fees; however, marketing the book can incur significant costs.
  • Every paperback title should have its own ISBN, which authors can purchase through Bowker for $125.
  • In our Bestselling Author Programs we offer Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages that are customized for each author’s preferences and needs. It’s a one-stop shop for authors who want to produce a professional book without having to source the talent they need from multiple people or companies or become the project manager for months.

Self-Publishing Pricing: How Much Does It Cost to Publish a Book?

Pricing can range from a few hundred dollars for a mostly DIY project to several thousand dollars for professional editing, design, ghostwriting, coaching, publishing assistance, marketing, and launch strategy.

What Is the Amazon Publishing Cost?

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) does not charge an upfront fee simply to upload and publish your book. For print books, Amazon uses print-on-demand, meaning the world’s largest online book retailer deducts the cost when a copy sells instead of requiring you to purchase inventory upfront. Amazon calculates the printing cost based on factors such as page count, trim size, ink type, and paper type. KDP then establishes a minimum list price that ensures the applicable royalty percentage can cover that printing cost.

Depending on your time constraints, writing ability, formatting skill, and cover design capabilities, your primary self-publishing expenses may include:

  • Writing or ghostwriting
  • Developmental editing
  • Copyediting and proofreading
  • Cover design
  • Interior formatting
  • ISBNs
  • Publishing/setup assistance
  • Keyword and category research
  • Marketing
  • Book launch strategy
  • Advertising
  • Coaching or consulting

Why Does Self-Publishing Pricing Vary So Much?

Think about building a website. Technically, you could purchase a domain, use a free template, write all the copy yourself, and have a functioning website for very little money. However, it won’t have the same effect as hiring a professional copywriter, web designer, SEO specialist, and branding expert to build a website designed to establish credibility, drive qualified traffic, convert visitors, and generate business. Furthermore, depending on the amount of webpages you need, your investment for these services will vary. It only makes sense that a five-page website would cost significantly less than a 25-page website.

The same principle applies to books.

The cost to self-publish a book depends largely on how much you do yourself and how much professional help you hire. And if you work with an independent publisher that offers full-service packages, your costs will vary based on whether or not you need a ghostwriter, and the final word-count of your manuscript.

However, for entrepreneurs, CEOs, lawyers, coaches, consultants, medical professionals, speakers, and other experts, investing in an experienced, reputable independent publishing company that handles every aspect of the process is a wise choice that pays for itself, saves incalculable time and aggravation, and yields a high return.

Remember, you’re not publishing a book solely to make a few dollars every time someone buys a copy, though Amazon will deposit money in your account based on your paperback and Kindle sales. More importantly, your book is an authority asset. A professionally produced book demonstrates your expertise, attracts your ideal clients, generates speaking opportunities, leads to media exposure, and introduces people to your larger body of work.

What Factors Affect Self-Publishing Pricing?

If you choose to find the professionals you need on your own instead of working with an all-inclusive independent publisher, you may incur the following expenses.

Professional Editing

Even the best writers need editors. Depending on your manuscript, you might need developmental or content editing, copyediting, line editing, proofreading, or some combination of them.

Editing prices vary according to the manuscript’s length, genre, condition, and type of editing required, but in general, professional editing costs between $0.01 to $0.05 per word, with developmental editing generally costing more than proofreading or copyediting. Let’s say you have an 80,000-word manuscript. Your editing costs would potentially fall between $1,920 to $4,560. A shorter business book could cost substantially less. However, editing is a critical aspect of the self-publishing cost where “cheap” can become expensive. Readers notice poorly written sentences, typos, repetition, inconsistencies, and disorganized content. If your book is supposed to establish you as the expert they need to solve their problems, skimping on editing undermines the very credibility you’re trying to convey.

Book Cover Design

We all know the saying, but the truth is that people really do judge books by their covers. Remember, your cover must compete with professionally published books when it appears as a tiny thumbnail on Amazon. Professional cover design prices for nonfiction books can range anywhere from $600 to $1,250 with an average of about $880, depending on the cover designer’s skill and experience. Regardless of how much you spend, the most important thing to remember is that your cover has a critical job as part of your book marketing. It must be a compelling visual representation of what the reader can expect when they buy your book.

As for AI and templated covers – don’t even think about it. AI is great for helping you convey a concept to your designer, but it does not take the place of a talented human. Readers can spot a generic AI or templated book cover and will scroll right past it, assuming the author cut corners — or worse, that the bland visual representation on the outside of the book means that the content on the inside is not worth their time or money. You don’t want to lose credibility because your cover design detracts from your message.

Interior Formatting

Your manuscript must transform from a Word doc, Google doc, or other type of file into an actual book. Print formatting determines elements such as margins, fonts, chapter openings, headers, page numbers, spacing, and other design details. The Kindle edition needs digital formatting to work properly across different devices. Formatting can range from DIY software solutions to several hundred dollars or more for a professional job, depending on complexity. Books containing charts, images, tables, footnotes, exercises, or other special elements require more work than straightforward text.

Ghostwriting & Self-Publishing Pricing

This aspect of self-publishing has a wide range in terms of cost. Some authors need nothing more than proofreading. Others have tremendous expertise and a powerful idea for a book, but don’t have the time, desire, or experience to turn that expertise into a polished manuscript. Professional ghostwriting can add thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to self-publishing pricing, depending on the length, complexity, research requirements, writer’s experience, and amount of collaboration involved. Writing coaching can provide a middle ground for authors who want to write the manuscript themselves but need help developing the concept, structure, chapters, and overall direction.

Why I Created the Bestselling Author Program

I developed my Bestselling Author Program packages to make the self-publishing process as easy, efficient, and cost-effective as possible. Instead of having to hunt online for professional ghostwriters, editors, cover designers, formatters, and a book launch expert, my clients choose the package that best suits their needs. Bestselling Author Program packages incorporate services such as professional formatting, editing, cover design, KDP publishing, keyword and category setup, writing coaching, and — in the most comprehensive Platinum Plan option — ghostwriting.

Our prices range from $5,000 on the low end to $20,000 on the higher end with ghostwriting. We base our prices on a 20,000-word manuscript, so if your manuscript exceeds 20,000 words, you will incur additional costs incrementally, depending on the final word count. Before we move forward, I discuss the details with every client and indicate how the word count policy works in all of my contracts, so there are no surprises.

We also offer USA Today Bestseller launches that range from $6,000 for a multi-author book (one 2,500-word chapter per contributor) to five figures for a solo book.

Because book marketing requires strategy, our packages include optimization of all book titles, subtitles, and book descriptions for Amazon keywords. And I handle the KDP setup for my clients, which includes categorizing their books properly for maximum exposure.

The only additional cost beyond the publishing package is the all-important ISBN number for your paperback. As I mentioned above, Bowker charges $125 for a single ISBN. However, if you plan on writing a book series (which I highly recommend depending on your type of business), you can purchase 10 ISBNs at a volume discount of $295 ($29.50 per ISBN). This fee is payable directly to Bowker.

Post-book launch, I also offer my Amazon Ads School for Authors as a separate, standalone service to help your book maintain visibility on Amazon and continue to attract your audience.

Why Work with a Full-Service Independent Publisher?

In addition to receiving a professionally produced product that can hold its own against any traditionally published book, hiring a full-service independent publisher spares you from having to find all the right professionals and act as a project manager coordinating their deadlines and processes. For a one-time investment, you can have the peace of mind of knowing a team of seasoned experts who already know each other are collaborating on your book within an organized system.

No need for you to worry about keeping the project on track as you juggle your daily responsibilities. Your independent publisher handles all the details. At the Bestselling Author Program, our team of professionals work in tandem to make the self-publishing process seamless, easy, and efficient. Once you sign up with us, you can expect your book to launch in 90 days — and because we understand that life happens, we build in a 30-day buffer. That means that the longest you’ll wait for your book to hit the market is 120 days.

Beyond the Amazon Royalty: The Real ROI of a Book

When I meet with clients, I always start with the end in mind — and it has nothing to do with royalties. While you will sell copies, a book’s real ROI is its power to attract your ideal clients, position you as the go-to expert, open doors to speaking engagements and podcasts, and lead to media exposure.

  • What if one person reads your book and hires you for a $5,000 consulting engagement?
  • What if the book leads to a $10,000 speaking opportunity?
  • What if a podcast host discovers your book and introduces you to thousands of potential clients?
  • What if your book becomes the reason someone chooses you instead of the competitor who doesn’t have one?

For entrepreneurs and experts, the most impressive ROI occurs after someone has read the book.

Frequently Asked Questions About Self-Publishing Pricing

How much does it cost to publish a book?

The cost to self-publish a book can range from very little for an almost entirely DIY project to several thousand dollars for professional editing, design, formatting, and production. Projects involving ghostwriting, extensive coaching, marketing, or done-for-you launch services can cost anywhere from $5,000 on the low end to 20,000-plus on the high end, depending on the word count and services needed.

Is Amazon KDP free?

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing doesn’t charge an upfront fee simply to upload and publish an eligible book. For print books, Amazon deducts printing costs when copies are sold, which eliminates the need to purchase inventory upfront.

What does Amazon charge to publish a paperback?

There isn’t one fixed amount. Amazon calculates paperback printing costs based on factors including page count, trim size, ink type, paper type, and marketplace.

Does Amazon tell me how much I need to charge for my book?

Amazon establishes a minimum list price for print books based on printing cost and the applicable royalty rate. You can generally choose a higher price within KDP’s permitted pricing range.

How much does Amazon take from a self-published book?

It depends on the format and price. Print royalties through standard distribution are currently calculated at either 50% or 60% of list price, depending on the book’s price and marketplace, minus printing costs. Eligible eBooks can earn a 70% royalty, while Amazon also offers a 35% eBook royalty option.

What is the KDP Cost for an eBook?

There’s no physical printing expense for an eBook. Depending on the royalty option, however, delivery costs may apply. Under Amazon’s 70% royalty option, delivery charges are based on the digital file size.

Is hiring an indie publishing company worth the money?

It depends on what you want the book to accomplish. An author publishing primarily as a hobby has very different needs from an entrepreneur using a book to establish authority, generate leads, secure media exposure, attract speaking opportunities, build a brand, and grow a business.

Should I choose my book price based on Amazon’s minimum retail price?

Not necessarily. The minimum tells you the lowest price Amazon will permit based on production costs and royalties. Your actual retail price should also consider your genre, competing titles, audience, positioning, marketing strategy, and the perceived value of your book. When you work with Michelle Kulp and her team at Bestselling Author Program, you will receive expert guidance on pricing your book.
