How To Publish An eBook and Make Money

Would you like to learn how to publish an eBook and make money?  I have published over 150 books for clients as well as eight of my own books and I know what it takes to make money with books.  Every author must decide on their particular profit path and then commit to that path.  The two main profit paths are:

  1. Make money on the front end of your book with Royalties; or
  2. Make money on the back end of your book selling programs, products or services

This is a decision you have to make for yourself.  I have many authors who tell me “I don’t care about the royalties at all, I just want to get my book out there and I’ll make money selling my services on the back end.”

Then I have authors who dream of making a living as a writer.  I am going to discuss both profit paths here.

In my book, Backwards Book Launch:  How to Reverse Engineer Your Book and Unlock It’s Hidden 6-figure Potential, I detail over 12 profit paths for your book and I have four unique case studies for you.  In this post, I will review the top 4 profit paths for authors.

Let’s begin with many author’s dream:  To making a living as a full time writer.

Mark Reklau, author of over nine books is now making $20,000+ per month and supporting himself solely on royalties.  We did an Amazon Ads training course which is part of Digital Retirement Academy which opens up 4 times per year.

I believe the best way to make money from royalties is to market test your book before you write it and then to write in that niche’ and publish at least three books in the series.

Mark has written several books in the area of “habits” and many of his readers purchase multiple books of his.  He also has taken the bestselling books and created a box set on Amazon.  All together Mark says he has over 30 “products” he is selling including ebooks, print books, audio books, box sets, books he has translated to other languages, etc.  The more books you have in one area, the better chance you have of making a living solely from the royalties of your books.  Become a specialist on your topic and not a generalist.

I’ve seen many authors of mine who have written additional books sell more copies of the first book after the second book comes out.  Successful full time authors always have a website and build an email list from their readers by offering a reader magnet.  Amazon does not give you the contact information of the customers of your book, so if you want to be a full time writer, then you need to build your own email list and market your books to that list.

If you want to take path number two and make money on the back end of your book, then you have 12 paths to choose from.  Here are the top 4:

  1. Sell a digital course on the back end of your book. Many readers want to go deeper on the material from your book or need help with implementation so you could offer a digital course with a discount for readers.
  2. Sell a high ticket coaching program on the back end of your book. I’ve had several readers of my Backwards Book Launch book, reach out to me and become clients.  Therefore, that book has generated thousands of dollars in back-end sales for me.
  3. Use the book to get paid speaking engagements. Nothing elevates you more as a candidate for a speaking event than being a published and bestselling author.  I’ve done speaking engagements and have earned tens of thousands of dollars on the back-end because I led with my bestselling book.
  4. License your material in your book.  If you have a book like Profit First by Mike Michaelowicz, then you can license readers on your methodology.  Mike licenses readers of his book to become “Profit First Professionals” and to date has made 7 figures on the back end of his book.

These are just some of the ways to make money with your eBook on Amazon.  It doesn’t cost much more to publish the print book, so I would invest in the formatting of the print book when you are publishing the eBook.

Is the marketplace crowded on Amazon when it comes to publishing an eBook?

Yes it is.  That’s why it’s not likely you’ll write one book and make a million dollars.  However, if you’re committed to one of the two profit paths and you don’t give up, I believe you can make six figures with your book over time.

I think it’s smart to choose path number two and begin earning money right away on the back end with your book.  You may over time, make money with royalties, but that is the slow path.
