10 Big Benefits to Writing a Book

Writing a book is a big commitment.  The good news is there are 10 big benefits to writing a book.

There is one caveat though…you must write the “right” book.  Writing the right book depends on your goal(s) with the book.

Many authors write books that don’t help them achieve their goals simply because they didn’t define the goals before they wrote the book.

Here are some goals a CEO might have with writing a book:

  • To get more exposure of their company, brand, the CEO and/or team.
  • To sell a product or program on the backend.
  • To build or grow an email list.
  • To scale a company.
  • To get media attention.
  • To become the go-to expert in their field.
  • To attract an Investor.
  • To elevate the image of the company, CEO or team.

When I work with clients in my “CEO Bestseller program” we always reverse engineer the book first to uncover what the #1 goal of the book is.

The book itself should also have a goal such as:

  • To educate
  • To entertain
  • To solve a big problem
  • To take the reader behind the curtains
  • To warm up the reader before selling
  • To expose the reader to the brand
  • To tell your story
  • To show something can be done

Most business owners want to know what the ROI (Return on Investment) is before they invest their time, money, and energy into writing a book.

Here are 10 BIG Benefits to Writing the “Right” Book:

  • Writing a book clarifies your thinking.  Writing a book is hard because it forces you to get clear on your thinking.  As Seth Godin says “Writing a book is a tremendous experience.  It pays off intellectually.  It clarifies your thinking.  It builds credibility.  It is a living engine of marketing and idea spreading, working every day to deliver your message with authority.  You should write one.”  Seth has written over 20 international bestsellers such as “The Purple Cow”, “The Dip”, “This is Marketing”, “The Practice” and “Linchpin”.

  • Being acknowledged by the top people in your industry. As Gary Keller explains in his book “The One Thing” about how writing the right book changed their image (Keller Real Estate) and income forever.  Here’s how Gary explains it: “In 2001 I called a meeting of our key executive team as fast as we were growing, we were still not acknowledged by the very top people in our industry.  I challenged our group to brainstorm 100 ways to turn this situation around. It took us all day to come up with the list.  The next morning, we narrowed the list down to ten ideas, and from there we chose just one big idea.  The one that we decided on was that I would write a book on how to become an elite performer in our industry.  It worked.  Eight years later that one book had not only become a national bestseller, but also had morphed into a series of books with total sales of over a million copies.  In an industry of about a million people, one thing changed our image forever.”  That book was “The Millionaire Real Estate Agent”.

  • Being the Go-To Expert In your Niche’. Writing a book elevates you as the go-to expert in your niche’ simply because you have put down your ideas and knowledge into a book that people can read, learn, and grow from.  Russel Brunson built an 8-figure business by writing a series of 3 books: “Dotcom Secrets”, “Expert Secrets”, and “Traffic Secrets”.  He is showing his expertise as the “funnel guy” in each of these books and on the back end he sells his popular software, Click Funnels.

  • Growing a Massive Following and Email List.  Writing a book can expose you to tens of thousands of people on Amazon’s platform that you would never have been able to reach on your own.  That’s how self-development guru, Brendon Burchard, went from invisible to being one of the most watched, quoted and followed personal development trainer. He wrote several books like: “High Performance Habits”, “The Motivation Manifesto:  9 Declarations to Claim Your Personal Power”, “The Charge”, “Life’s Golden Ticket”, and “The Millionaire Messenger”.  Books grew his following and his email list as he used a book funnel for years to build a massive following.

  • Being Seen as a Thought Leader in Your Industry.  Writing a book changes the way people see you and relate to you.  Business author and thought leader, Mike Michalowicz has founded and sold two multi-million-dollar companies.  He currently leads two-multimillion-dollar ventures, as he tests his latest business research for his books.  His books have helped him become a sought-after keynote speaker and be seen as an innovative thought leader.  Some of his books are: “Profit First”, “All In”, “Clock Work”, “The Pumpkin Plan”, “Fix This Next” and “The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur”.

  • You Can Reach Your Ideal Clients and Grow Your Business with The Right Book(s).  Erik Hanberg has spent more than 20 years working with nonprofits.  He is the author of 4 books for nonprofits, focusing on nonprofit management, fundraising, social media, and board governance, which collectively have sold tens of thousands of copies.  His books include: “The Little Book of Gold”, “The Little Book of Boards”, “The Little Book of Nonprofit Leadership”, and “The Little Book of Likes”.  His books gave his company exposure and attracted his ideal clients.

  • 10x Your Credibility.  I have written over 32 books to date.  In 2020, I did an experiment and wrote a book a month for a year.  I replaced my social security income in 12 months and then wrote a book about that “Digital Retirement” which then turned into a 6-figure online course.  My business has grown exponentially by writing books and putting my ideas, research, and thoughts on paper.  To date I have sold over 33,000 books and have “borrows” of over 10,000 on Amazon.  My books give me massive credibility for my programs, “CEO Bestseller” and “Digital Retirement”.  Writing the right book will increase your credibility in the marketplace.

  • Your Book Sells and Markets for you 24/7 While You Sleep.  Your book is a marketing engine that sells 24/7; even while you sleep someone is reading your book somewhere and may become a follower, lead, or client because of your book. Cal Newport, a Professor at Georgetown University, contributing writer for the New Yorker and host of the Deep Questions Podcast and Author of 8 books, published his first books at 18 years old (How to Become a straight A Student and How to Win at College).  His Writing has grown his business, and his books sell 24/7 while he sleeps.  Some of his books are: “Deep Work”, “Digital Minimalism”, “So Good They Can’t Ignore You”, “A World Without Email”, and his newest book, “Slow Productivity”.  Cal also sells an online course because of his books that brings in 6-figures.

  • Your Book Finds Your Fans for You.  Because Amazon is the second leading search engine, not having a book is costing you.  It’s costing you exposure and it’s costing you fans.  By writing and publishing a book and being on the bestsellers list, your fans can now find you.  Stop being the best kept secret in your industry and write that book.  CEO, Rachel Rodgers is an Intellectual Property Attorney who started her career working on the hill with nonprofits and federal judges when she realized that changing the world is easier when you have cash in your bank account.  That’s when she decided to build a million-dollar business and teach other women how to do the same.  Rachel launched her brand, with a bestselling book, “We Should All Be Millionaires” and her “We Should All be Millionaires Club.”  Over 100,000 fans have found her as a result.

  • Become the Hunted Instead of the Hunter.  When you are a bestselling author people will seek you out.  When you are the best kept secret in your industry, you must go hunting for customers and clients.  Robin Sharma is one of the world’s premier speakers on Leadership and Personal Mastery, recently name of the of the World’s Top Leadership Gurus.  Sharma’s books are a huge part of his success as people find out about him because of his books.  Some of those include: “The 5 AM Club”, “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari”, “The Everyday Hero Manifesto”, and “The Leader Who Had No Title”.  Write a book, tell your story, and become the hunted.
